Dave and Lara

I don't think I could have planned it better if I tried! When Lara asked me to take a few shots of her and Dave when he came home I was definitely excited! Dave has been serving us proudly overseas for the past few months. He is home for a short period of time then he will return to finish his tour. Shooting in December is not my favorite, but let's be honest it's for Dave and Lara and they are a couple I admire a LOT! I hope one day I'll have a bond even half as close to another as they have with each other.

We decided on shooting at castle island which made me think "oh no I'll freeze!" But Dave and Lara must have some amazing luck because it was so warm out yesterday! Very windy...but I can make that work! The shoot today went great. Dave and Lara both had an easy going personality which helped me to relax and focus on finding that right angle. And of course their goofy sense of humor kept me smiling the whole time too! I love the photos and I'll have more to share soon!

Glenn and Deanna

After shooting Mike and Michelle's wedding Mike referred me to Glenn. Glenn and Mike are both part of the US Military. I met with Glenn and Deanna at a Starbucks down about halfway between our homes. I was of course nervous about this meeting as well because I had never interviewed to be a wedding photographer...in fact wedding photography was the one thing I always said I'd never do! Too much pressure and stress, but I felt like I should be doing it. After talking to Deanna on the phone we agreed on a location. They live about an hour away so it would be a little to far for me to drive just to show my portfolio. (a portfolio that I put together the night before...way to procrastinate!) After talking for a short period of time we agreed on a price and I was informed of their wedding date. We also arranged time to go out and take some engagement photos. (one example seen above)

A few weeks after our first meeting we met again at Nantasket beach in Hull to take a few engagement shots. Trying to pose them was more difficult than I imagined. I wanted it to seem like I knew exactly what I was doing, but I'm not sure it came across that way! Either way we walked up and down the Hull forts and beach line and I was able to get some beautiful pictures of them. We went over a few wedding details as well. (i.e. location, times, hotels, etc.) It was a very productive day, and it gave me that little ounce of confidence I needed to get ready for what will come at me next.

Getting Back on Track

Ok, I know I've been horrible about updating this blog! I've been focusing on getting all my work in order and trying to join in on the holiday rush! Thank God all of that is over now!

Since September I've been keeping busy trying to buy all the equipment I'll need to start. And I've been shooting a little. In the beginning of September I shot Mike and Michelle's wedding. That was my first major shoot that really surprised me. I was extremely nervous. I had barely been shooting and now I'm taking on a wedding by myself...talk about jumping into something! Mike and Michelle were amazing to shoot. They understood it was my first wedding and were really good at putting my mind at ease. It got a little crazy and I really didn't get all the group shots I wanted, but overall it went better than I expected. I have put a few photos on my website. http://www.photolawphotography.com/.

Since that wedding I have had a few referals and now I'm booked for 5 more weddings this year! So excited! I will be going back to college next month as well. Since I am going to be shooting so many weddings this year one of my courses will be all about the business side of the wedding photography. My other course will just focus on digital photography. I'm hoping I can keep everyone up to date on those courses once they start! Ok I should get back to work, but since this is a photo blog I hope you enjoy the photograph I took for our family Christmas card!

At Work...

As you can tell today is a very busy day at the insurance company...or not. I would upload some nice photographs from college but I am at work so I have a very limited selection available to me right now.
I would like to dedicate this lovely photo of my cat to my college professor...the one and only Peter Laytin. I know how much he would enjoy this shot! :-p

Enjoy!

Time to get started

I've created this site as a way for me to share my experience with my friends and family. I wanted everyone to be a part of my career. I will always need subjects to shoot and advice to listen to!

For those who don't know much about me let me explain. I graduated in May of 2007. I went to college with a huge passion for photography, but soon after I lost that passion. The stress and pressure of deadlines and being forced to be creative, original and the best really takes a toll after a while. Critque days were the worst. I dreaded them. Putting your hard work on a wall and listen to a group of people tell you what you did wrong is hard to take to week after week. After I while I began to think I wasn't good enough to be a freelance photographer. My work wasn't any good in the critque room, why should I think it would be any good in the real world? At that point I picked up another concentration so I had something to fall back on since in my mind photography wasn't going to happen for me.

By my junior year I had given up on my dream of being a photographer and focused on my studies in communtication. Trying to find something that interests me enough to make a career out of it. I finished all my photography courses the best I could and graduated with a degree in photography and professional communications. I focused on my internship at Dynasty Model and Talent. I wanted to work towards becoming a booking agent, and I edventually became the manager of the baby division. I loved that job. I had a job that I loved to talk about...but something was still missing. I watched the photoshoots as much as I could and I loved to look through the images and create compostion cards.

Unfortunately I could not stay there. There were many factors why but the main issue was I was spending most of what I making on my commute in and out of work everyday. It was time to get a "real" job. One with good benefits and a company to grow within. That's the kind of job everyone is supposed to have right? Well I thought so. I've been working at Arbella Insurance for 6 months now, and the company is great to work for, but it doesn't make me proud to tell people what I do for work.

I realize that I need to stop wasting time and just jump in head first and see what I can do. I can never suceed if I never try. So enjoy the site, give me you opioion and if you ever want me to be your photographer just let me know!
